With the permission of the PHY 490 instructor, the student may use an additional credit of PHY 407 plus 2 credits of PHY 490 as 3 credit hours of electives. With the required 1 credit of PHY 407, the student would take a total of 2 credits of PHY 407 with this option.

With the permission of the thesis advisor and the graduate committee, the student can complete the thesis option.

The student must complete 1 additional credit of PHY407, 2 credits of PHY 490 (typically spread over two semesters) and 6 credits of PHY 499. With the 1 credit of PHY 407 required of all students, the student would take a total of 2 credits of PHY 407 with the thesis option.

The student works closely with the adviser to complete a thesis based on original research. Upon completion of a written thesis, a final oral examination/thesis defense is required.

In general, students admitted to the MS in Physics program should have completed coursework in science and math equivalent to that required for a B.S. degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Material Science & Engineering or equivalent.
